In 2015, the UN released the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), an urgent call to align our efforts towards “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet” by 2030.

Unfortunately we have not made meaningful progress on these goals.

TAURIO EXISTS to HELP change that —

Our Commitment to Progress

Taurio is doing our part to make progress on the UN’s SDGs by positively impacting the iKPIs below. We cannot rely solely on governments and big organizations to fix the world’s problems. It is time for entrepreneurs to do our part in making this world a better place for all.

What is a ‘For Progress’ Company?

A For Progress Company is making a concerted effort to do their part in making progress towards to the United Nation’s SDGs, and has (at a minimum):

  • A company mission aligned with one or more SDGs
  • A product or offering that positively influences Key Performance Indicators towards the SDGs, AKA “Impact Key Performance Indicators” (iKPIs)
  • A public webpage that tracks progress on their iKPIs on a regular basis

Life On Land

Goal 15: Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

15.3 By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world.

iKPI: Reduce proportion of land that is degraded over total land area.

WHY IT MATTERS: Desertification & BIODIVERSITY

Human activity has altered almost 75 per cent of the earth’s surface, squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet.

  • Currently, land degradation has reduced productivity in 23 per cent of the global terrestrial area, and between $235 billion and $577 billion in annual global crop output is at risk as a result of pollinator loss.
  • Habitat loss and deterioration, largely caused by human actions, have reduced global terrestrial habitat integrity by 30 per cent relative to an unimpacted baseline.
  • While protected areas now cover 15 per cent of terrestrial and freshwater environments and 7 per cent of the marine realm, they only partly cover important sites for biodiversity and are not yet fully ecologically representative and effectively or equitably managed.

Zero Hunger

Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.

2.4 By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

iKPI: Increased the proportion of agricultural area using productive and sustainable agricultural practices as a percentage of total agricultural area.

2.1 By 2030, end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular, the poor and people in vulnerable situations, including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round.

iKPI: Increased efficiency of logistical supply chains in agriculture which ensure access to markets and affordable food.

TAURIO IMPACT
Through partnership with emerging regional producer networks, Taurio enables farms to provide local families with healthier, local food. (metrics coming soon!)

2.3 By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

iKPI: Increase in production per labor unit in small-scale farming, pastoral, and forestry enterprises according to local/national classification.

TAURIO IMPACT
Taurio monitoring helps to ensure farms increase “found acres” on land managed by increasing palatable forage. (metrics coming soon!)

WHY IT MATTERS
  • An estimated 2 billion people in the world did not have regular access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food in 2019.
  • If recent trends continue, the number of people affected by hunger will surpass 840 million by 2030, or 9.8 percent of the global population.

Climate Action

Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.

iKPI: Increase in communication channels strengthening institutional, systemic and individual capacity-building to implement adaptation, mitigation and technology transfer, and development actions.

TAURIO IMPACT
Taurio technology is designed with farmer data sovereignty and network collaboration in mind, in order to empower research, increase verified outcomes and influence action to mitigate climate change. (metrics coming soon!)

WHY IT MATTERS
  • From 1880 to 2012, average global temperature increased by 0.85°C. To put this into perspective, for each 1 degree of temperature increase, grain yields decline by about 5 per cent. Maize, wheat and other major crops have experienced significant yield reductions at the global level of 40 megatons per year between 1981 and 2002 due to a warmer climate.
  • Given current concentrations and on-going emissions of greenhouse gases, it is likely that by the end of this century, the increase in global temperature will exceed 1.5°C compared to 1850 to 1900 for all but one scenario. The world’s oceans will warm and ice melt will continue. Average sea level rise is predicted as 24 – 30cm by 2065 and 40-63cm by 2100. Most aspects of climate change will persist for many centuries even if emissions are stopped
